WILD WOOLLY HEADS
I started Wild Woolly Heads to help people who were grieving over their passed dogs. I was making dogs as a hobby and friends kept asking me if I could make a replica of a their passed dog or a friend’s passed dog. I ended up doing so many dogs that I had to start a business.
When did you start your business?
I started making dogs about 7 yrs ago but the business started in 2017.
What made you want to open a pet business?
I really love dogs. It is my dream job to talk to clients about their dogs and then spend all day making dogs.
Tell us more about your business
My favourite thing about my business is that it is about dogs. However their are so many things that I love about my work. I work from home with my dog with me all day that is a bonus. I get to be creative and find nearly all dogs a challenge as even if I do the same breed they are all unique in their own way. I thing I don’t like about being in business for myself is that I am not very creative when it come to marketing. I could outsource it but then I would have to charge so much more for my dogs, therefore I do it myself. I tend to get most of my business very word of mouth and some from social media.
What do you sell/offer?
I make miniature replicas of people’s dogs. They are made from 100% Aussie wool/ glass eyes and handmade clay nose. Each dog is painstakingly made over 15-20 hrs with one fine needle. First I make a wire armature, then wrap that in core wool, then add the detail of the dog. Different colour wools are blended together to get the right colour of each dog.
What is your favourite part about running the business?
That I can control how much work that I get and how I want to move forward.
Do you own any pets yourself? What are their names and what type of pet?
I have a 16 yr old golden retriever/cocker spaniel who is extremely special. She lived with me in Japan for 5 yrs, Singapore for 5 yrs and now is back in Australia. She still walks 40 mins a day, eats like a horse and barks at the postman, everyone thinks she is amazing for her age.
Who are some of your favourite Instagram Stars?
I follow mostly dogs on Instagram. I know funny. I love all of them!
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?Stick to your guns! Don’t let anyone tell you that it won’t work if you have a gut feeling that it will. Practice, practice, practice getting it right before you go to market. Give lots of product away to get feedback before you go to market. This will iron out a lot of problem in the long run.
